This is the MuttShack story. Volunteers from around America that rescued 3,000 pets in New Orleans over the first 8 months of Hurricane Katrina.

Martin St. John, co-founder and director of MuttShack.org, who was also one of the most dedicated volunteers during Hurricane Katrina 2005-2006, and selflessly continues in the effort that helps rescue pets well into 2007, brings awareness to the pet crisis in New Orleans, Louisiana, and the Gulf Coast.
MuttShack.org stayed for months rescuing thousands of animals in the New Orleans area, setting up stations at places such as a local Winn-Dixie parking lot, and Lake Castle School with blessings from the principal. They worked tirelessly without city electrity, air conditioning, food, and water. Everything had to be shipped in. They showered in cardboard boxes, slept on air mattresses and floors - while devoting every waking minute to saving 3,000 pets left behind in the disaster. Vets, techs, drivers, pet behavior specialists came from around the country to become MuttShackers. And they have come back on many occasions even 2 years after Hurricane Katrina to still rescue, care for, and check up on pets still left in these disaster zones.
Furthermore, MuttShack.org has been igned the important job of pet transport and rescue for all of Louisiana’s and New Orleans’ natural disasters. To this day, they rehearse combined side-by-side evacuation transport for pets and owners, to make sure the widespread mistakes made by others during Katrina never happen again. However, MuttShack, the official pet transport/rescue for Louisiana must still fund most of these tremendously important pet/owner evacuation rehearsals themselves.
This is their story.

“Let me tell you about a child that in Pre-K was not interacting with his peers because he could not keep up, because he did not always know the right things to do or say to get other children to take notice. By the time this child started Kindergarten he learned that he would be left behind, that other children would start to treat him differently and even tease him, and that it was easier to play by himself. Now let me tell you about the child that is now risking interaction with others, that now has something in common with them, and even is seen as special in the very eyes of those that had deemed him different. Of course this child is Hunter. And the change is Kicker. Even when Kicker is not with him…he is. This is my hope for every child and team placed by 4 Paws… that the world grant them a chance to be seen for who they are, not for what they can’t do, and that a bridge of acceptance is built between able and “dis”abled.” Michelle, Parent of a child with a 4 Paws Service Dog
