pit bull puppy training and socialization question?

Posted on Sep 30, 2008 under Aggression Training, Dog Training, Puppy Training | 4 Comments

I just got a pit puppy..he has a great attitude and comes from a good family background..but I have started to notice he is starting to be very protective when certain people come around..he is very curious and gets excited but then wants to come and sit between my feet and just bark at them.. do you have any tips on how to get him over this habit?..I take him to work with me every day and try to introduce him to as many people and other animals as possible..I just dont want any aggression to start. (I’m planning to take him to puppy training classes in about 2 more weeks..) but any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!! by the way he’s 10 weeks old right now.
I would say your puppy’s reaction stems more out of fear and uncertainty than from “protection”. Keep doing what you are doing. Introduce your pup to as many people as you possibly can. all colors, sizes, races, etc. get them used to men and women, kids and adults. Good luck with the little guy!

How much does dog training generally cost? Mainly for obedience?

Posted on Sep 30, 2008 under Dog Training | 6 Comments

I’d like to know how much dog obedience training usually costs Or even where I could personally learn how to train and influence my dog’s behaviors. Thank you for helping
obedience classes are usually five to six weeks in length , and cost between $ 125 dollars to $180. Look for a trainer that uses positive reinforce training methods in teaching dog training Private lesson may cost you as much as $50 per session , which last for one hour. Group less ions are usually one hour. The best time to start training a dog is when he/she is 6 months old. En roll your dog in puppy classes, and than in the beginning dog training class and than in the immediate and later on in the advance class . Each level takes 5 or 6 weeks to complete. Many dogs if they start early enough get to the immediate level when they are four months old. There are some basic dog training techniques like , food luring to get you dog to focus on you that you can do on your own. If you find a dog training class in your area , you can go there and ask the trainer if you can sit -in on one of his/her classes to see if it fits your needs This will give you a chance to evaluate the class , ask questions, and do not be shy about asking the trainer about his/her experience and references. Good luck

What should I do with my dog *before* we go to a dog training class so that she pays more attention?

Posted on Sep 29, 2008 under Dog Training, Puppy Training | 4 Comments

We have a 7 month old beagle/coonhound mix and going to beginner classes for training. The trainer said we should exercise her alot before going to class. We don’t want to tire her out too much…but will try more next week….see if it helps. Are there any other suggestions besides tire the dog out? Thanks
Exercise seems to be the best idea. If your class uses food, you might want to put her on a tiny fast. I don’t know how you normally feed your dog, but have her be slightly hungry. i.e., if you free feed her, pick up her food a few hours before.

When training a new born puppy should i use a crate?

Posted on Sep 29, 2008 under Puppy, Puppy Training | 19 Comments

I really don’t like the idea of getting a crate, but every book I read about puppy training said your should get a crate, but when it said you did not have to get a crate then it would say use the newspaper method instead……..but I already decided that I was going to use that method whether I hade a crate or not! Should I get a crate (all the critics say so) or should I not!? YES OR NO Please explain why! Thank you!
I new puppy needs a place of it’s own to feel comfortable and safe. If you have kids etc. it gives him a safe haven and if he is tired he knows he can go there, no one will bother him. Also unless you plan on staying awake all night to make sure he doesn’t swallow a sock or chew the leg off your bed this makes sure he is safe. Don’t put anything in his crate that he can chew and choke on and remove his collar. Also when you get up in the morning CARRY him outside right away and put him down where you want him to go to the bathroom. This teaches him where to go and to not pee in your house. Also if you travel, most places and people will accept a crated dog but not a loose one. Think of the crate as a crib not as a cage. It is to keep your puppy safe when you’re not watching him and if you’re driving it secures him if you get in an accident which will be less likely if he isn’t in your lap. Good luck and enjoy your new puppy!

Has anyone ever taken their dog to the PetSmart or Petco dog training classes? Did you like them?

Posted on Sep 28, 2008 under Dog Training | 11 Comments

Which one is better? Is your dog still exhibiting training?
All the petsmarts in my area have turned to petcos, so I think they’re the same company. I’m going to the first puppy training class tonight, my dogs breed type needs the training, socialization and stimulation, otherwise I would have just used a good training book and done the exercises myself. If your dog is that type too that needs this (mine’s a jack russell terrier haha) you might want to invest in this too. If you don’t like the trainer’s methods, you can always get a full refund. But you have to register in advance for the classes because they only allow so many pups. They also guarentee your dogs training for a lifetime or money back. They said I will be able to walk my dog without a leash (in most situations) for life. The 8 classes where I’m going are $95 and 1 hr long. *****UPDATE**** Had the training class, there were 6 other puppies there ranging from 12 weeks to 7 months. It will be hard with the two 12 week puppies, not because they misbehave but they just can’t learn the same so young. Anyway, basically we met in a room and the puppies socialized. There was a blue pit bull, very beautiful who my dog bonded with maybe only because the 12 months bonded with themselves and none of the other pups were as friendly. While the puppies socialized the trainer introduced herself, said she owns 10 dogs, told us a little about vaccine importance and stuff we knew, said she could help us out if we wanted to show our dogs or do agility, then we went around the room introducing ourselves and saying the major things we hope to accomplish at the classes. Most people said to stop biting, but..they are puppies after all..well anyway, we learned the sit command and the “look at me” command.. Next week we’ll be in the back warehouse doing things with leash walking. So far, my thoughts are “well, this is nothing I couldn’t teach myself SO FAR..but my puppy enjoys the socializing and was happy, and I don’t know how to teach walking without a leash so I’ll stick with it.” They had older dog class after the puppies. Hope that summary helped..

Are dog training (shock) collars safe and do they work?

Posted on Sep 25, 2008 under Dog Training, Obedience | 6 Comments

I am considering using a training collar to teach my dog boundaries. I need to be able to keep her off leash, but she runs off if I let her off the leash. A fence, even an invisible fence, is out of the question as its not my house. I’ve tried teaching her boundaries for the last 5 months but it is not working well. She won’t respond to “come” unless she’s in the mood. I want to use a shock collar but I worry it may be inhumane. Are they effective and are they safe to use?
First off shock collars are not inhumane. Yes they are safe to use. They do not give a strong shock. Yes I tried it on my own arm before ever putting it on the dog. Properly used as a training tool they work very well for certain things. You need to read all the information that comes with the collar and learn how to use it. Then you need to set up visable boundries for your dog. Your dog must have some sort of visable thing to see to learn where the boundries are. Like flags. If your dog does not respong to the come commad or only does so at her pleasure you need to go back and do some basic obedience work with your pet. You need to have the basics down and if your dog does not come you do not have those down yet.
