When training a new born puppy should i use a crate?

Posted on Sep 29, 2008 under Puppy, Puppy Training | 19 Comments

I really don’t like the idea of getting a crate, but every book I read about puppy training said your should get a crate, but when it said you did not have to get a crate then it would say use the newspaper method instead……..but I already decided that I was going to use that method whether I hade a crate or not! Should I get a crate (all the critics say so) or should I not!? YES OR NO Please explain why! Thank you!
I new puppy needs a place of it’s own to feel comfortable and safe. If you have kids etc. it gives him a safe haven and if he is tired he knows he can go there, no one will bother him. Also unless you plan on staying awake all night to make sure he doesn’t swallow a sock or chew the leg off your bed this makes sure he is safe. Don’t put anything in his crate that he can chew and choke on and remove his collar. Also when you get up in the morning CARRY him outside right away and put him down where you want him to go to the bathroom. This teaches him where to go and to not pee in your house. Also if you travel, most places and people will accept a crated dog but not a loose one. Think of the crate as a crib not as a cage. It is to keep your puppy safe when you’re not watching him and if you’re driving it secures him if you get in an accident which will be less likely if he isn’t in your lap. Good luck and enjoy your new puppy!

What is the cheapest but good dog training company?

Posted on Sep 19, 2008 under Dog Training, Puppy, Puppy Training | 5 Comments

Im 13 and I tried to potty train my dog but he peed where I wanted him to pee for only 1 week now hes starting to pee everywhere again. I need a trainer that is good at potty training dogs.
first be sure to have him on a feeding schedule.. then you will know when he has to potty. dante gets breakfast at 7 and a drink.. then i pick everything up for the day.. then dinner at 6 with a drink. i pick up his water around 8 and listen to see if he drinks anymore. when he drinks, just take him out to potty a few minutes later. after he goes, give him lots of hoorays and hugs adn scratches… then he knows he did a good job. also, be sure to clean up the old potty spots in the house reallly good. then he cant smell where he went and think its ok to go there again. good luck!

How do you get a dog unafraid of dog toys?

Posted on Sep 17, 2008 under Behaviour, Puppy, Puppy Training | 7 Comments

I want to know because my dog is afraid of squeaky toys and bouncy balls. Please tell me how to get him unafraid of toys.
If it’s something that is good for the dog, then try covering it in peanut butter or cream cheese. But if the toy won’t improve your dog’s overall health, get rid of it. Forcing a toy on your dog is like forcing you to have an arranged marriage (unless you believe in arranged marriages, in which case I didn’t mean to offend). Some toys, such as bones, improve your dog’s oral health. Dog’s can’t brush their teeth, but chewing on bones help to clean their teeth which reduces the chance of a gum infection.

How Does Bonding With A Dog Happen?

Posted on Sep 16, 2008 under Caring & Living with Your Dog, Emotional Wellbeing, Puppy | 2 Comments

My Female Pitbull-Boxer had nine puppies; I gave away six of them and kept three—a sweet female black Lab and two male Mastiffs; I thought I was going to bond with the one male (Kilo), but it happened with the other one (Chico) instead! It’s cool because I love Chico VERY much!!! It turns out that he is also the LEADER of the pack! I would like to know how the BONDING between us happened! Any ideas??? Gracias!
If you fell in love with him you must of gotten to know him the best, By paying more attention to him you bonded to him and he bonded to you. Dogs love people too.

What is the most suitable breed of dog for a first time dog owner?

Posted on Sep 15, 2008 under Caring & Living with Your Dog, Emotional Wellbeing, Ownership, Puppy | 14 Comments

I want to buy a dog, but i don’t know what breed to choose for a first time owner.
There’s no specific dog that is suitable for a first time dog owner. I have been a dog owner for about 8 years and I cannot say how adorable and precious they are. Any dogs match anybody if you are ready to take care of them. For me, my first dog was a Beagle. It was for my sister’s birthday present. He was such an adorable, little puppy. We named him Lu. However, he died a few days later after showing unusual symptoms. This made me depressed for a few months till we got a new dog breed, a Maltese. Honestly, I have to say there aren’t any dog breeds that match a particular type of person. Just show affection towards them. Any dogs react to that, and if you do have one in mind, just choose that. It always doesn’t have to be the smarter, better-looking, or a loyal one. It depends on what dog breed you like.

My 4 month old puppy chews and gnaws on everything - even humans. Is this just normal teething puppy behavior?

Posted on Jul 12, 2008 under Behaviour, Dog Training, Puppy, Puppy Training | 18 Comments

Have chew toys, he is a male terrier.
Please remember that while puppies chew on everything, they do not inherently know how to play with toys or what is their and what isn’t. Be sure to take plenty of time to ‘teach’ him how to play with toys - have them handy and when he reaches for your hand, give him a toy instead. NO HITTING! but collar corrections are effective and forcing submission is also important (be sure to hold him around the muzzle loosely long enough until he really, really submits - you should see him roll his eyes and/or sigh). If he immediately reaches back for your hand, you were NOT effective! You can stop play-biting within days if you’re consistent. Don’t use raw-hides - use bones or nylabone products or kongs. Raw-hides cannot be digested and can be softened so much that they can be swallowed and cause a blockage. Never let your puppy do to you what you wouldn’t allow him to do to a 2-year-old child. Patience, consistency, and a firm hand will give you a great foundation and is worth the time.

Our month old cockerspanie puppy is very agressive when he has a bone, how do I put a stop to this behaviour?

Posted on Jul 08, 2008 under Behaviour, Dog Training, Puppy, Puppy Training | 5 Comments

I love our cockerspaniel puppy “charlie” to bits and I want to keep his teeth and gums healthy and clean so i give him raw bones, but once its in his posession you just cant go near him for hours its like he has a split personality. He wont let anyone near him, in fear that we will take his bone, even once he has come inside and the bone is out side he stil show aggressive behaviour when approached. Charlie is normally so friendly and cuddly. Raw bones are banned in our house for now, as that seems to triggetr the aggressive behaviour, I have found that puppy pedigree denta bones work well as they clean the teeth but he doesn’t get aggressive towards us. I am very concerned about this behaviour and I want to know why he would have acted like this and how I can prevent it in future. Please help.
Hi there. Bones, especially raw ones, are considered “high value” to a dog. They are an extra special treat that Charlie only gets every now and again — they look good, taste good, and Charlie sees absolutely NO reason why he should give his fantastic prize up for you. After all, how would you feel if you were eating your favorite bar of chocolate and someone snatched it away with no warning or compromise? you wouldn’t be happy, would you? well, Charlie is doing the same. The best way to combat possessiveness is the show the dog that you are no threat to his food. I like to compromise and here is how… “What you got there, Charlie? you got a tasty bone? good dog. Lookie, want a piece of ham? this also tastes good.” *Charlie drops bone* *You pick up bone, give the dog a treat, and give the bone straight back*…dog learns that by dropping the bone, the bone is not going to magically disappear, and the hand that can take it away is also the provider of tasty treats. Hand feeding him can also help him associate you being no threat to his food. Best of luck!

What age can I give my puppy treats for obedience training?

Posted on Jul 06, 2008 under Obedience, Puppy, Puppy Training | 8 Comments

My puppy is about 12 weeks old. I want to begin obedience training but I don’t know what to use as a reward treat. I don’t want it to be a big treat but I want it to be good for her. Any ideas?
I can’t add anything to the previous suggestions. They all are good. But I would suggest that you be a bit stingy. It’s OK to give a treat at the end of the session, but do not give something after every response throughout the session. If you do this, the animal will associate obedience only with the treat, and later on when you are “operational” (no treats), it may very well become a little recalcitrant. You want to ingrain the perception that obedience is its own reward. Good luck!!
