pit bull puppy training and socialization question?

Posted on Sep 30, 2008 under Aggression Training, Dog Training, Puppy Training | 4 Comments

I just got a pit puppy..he has a great attitude and comes from a good family background..but I have started to notice he is starting to be very protective when certain people come around..he is very curious and gets excited but then wants to come and sit between my feet and just bark at them.. do you have any tips on how to get him over this habit?..I take him to work with me every day and try to introduce him to as many people and other animals as possible..I just dont want any aggression to start. (I’m planning to take him to puppy training classes in about 2 more weeks..) but any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!! by the way he’s 10 weeks old right now.
I would say your puppy’s reaction stems more out of fear and uncertainty than from “protection”. Keep doing what you are doing. Introduce your pup to as many people as you possibly can. all colors, sizes, races, etc. get them used to men and women, kids and adults. Good luck with the little guy!

When training a new born puppy should i use a crate?

Posted on Sep 29, 2008 under Puppy, Puppy Training | 19 Comments

I really don’t like the idea of getting a crate, but every book I read about puppy training said your should get a crate, but when it said you did not have to get a crate then it would say use the newspaper method instead……..but I already decided that I was going to use that method whether I hade a crate or not! Should I get a crate (all the critics say so) or should I not!? YES OR NO Please explain why! Thank you!
I new puppy needs a place of it’s own to feel comfortable and safe. If you have kids etc. it gives him a safe haven and if he is tired he knows he can go there, no one will bother him. Also unless you plan on staying awake all night to make sure he doesn’t swallow a sock or chew the leg off your bed this makes sure he is safe. Don’t put anything in his crate that he can chew and choke on and remove his collar. Also when you get up in the morning CARRY him outside right away and put him down where you want him to go to the bathroom. This teaches him where to go and to not pee in your house. Also if you travel, most places and people will accept a crated dog but not a loose one. Think of the crate as a crib not as a cage. It is to keep your puppy safe when you’re not watching him and if you’re driving it secures him if you get in an accident which will be less likely if he isn’t in your lap. Good luck and enjoy your new puppy!

What is the cheapest but good dog training company?

Posted on Sep 19, 2008 under Dog Training, Puppy, Puppy Training | 5 Comments

Im 13 and I tried to potty train my dog but he peed where I wanted him to pee for only 1 week now hes starting to pee everywhere again. I need a trainer that is good at potty training dogs.
first be sure to have him on a feeding schedule.. then you will know when he has to potty. dante gets breakfast at 7 and a drink.. then i pick everything up for the day.. then dinner at 6 with a drink. i pick up his water around 8 and listen to see if he drinks anymore. when he drinks, just take him out to potty a few minutes later. after he goes, give him lots of hoorays and hugs adn scratches… then he knows he did a good job. also, be sure to clean up the old potty spots in the house reallly good. then he cant smell where he went and think its ok to go there again. good luck!
